"Through our national food and drink policy, we want to … build on our international reputation and deliver the best of Scottish produce”

“The food and drink sector already employs 360,000 people… what we are aiming for now is further investment in the skills and innovation required to increase its value to the economy to 12.5 billion pounds by 2017.”

Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment, The Scottish Government – 3rd March 2010

The Food and Drink industry is a mainstay of the Scottish economy. It generates £10billion a year, employs one in five people in the manufacturing sector and is central to the Government’s sustainability agenda.

As the wider economy moves towards recovery, the food and drink industry has been positioned as an essential source of sustainable growth, building on well-established brands and harnessing the natural opportunities that Scotland’s geography affords. The latest tourism campaign positions 2010 as the 'Year of Food and Drink' in a dedicated move to promote the sector, but what efforts are being made to overcoming inherent problems at home?

To deliver on this target for growth the industry needs to address issues which have led to Scotland being dubbed “sick man of Europe”: Concerns such as alcohol abuse, obesity and heart disease continue to dominate the image of Scotland and add to the infamous reputation as the home of the deep-fried Mars bar.

This conference is a chance to debate how both industry and public sector can work together to ensure wider health issues and specific industry challenges do not become a barrier to growth for this core part of the Scottish economy.

Key areas of focus of the debate include:
  • Sustainability and managing waste from food and drink production
  • Health inequalities and culture change
  • Education / skills development
